More #pollinatorsweek fun! Hummingbird moths are probably my absolute favorite pollinator. These “flying shrimp” as I like to call them are huge daytime moths, who can be seen sipping at various wildflowers (like the wild bergamot - also known as bee balm- pictured here). Just like hummingbirds, they can fly backwards AND forwards, as well as hover in place. Always a treat to see, and, yes, big enough to be mistaken for a hummingbird.

In homor of #pollinatorweek jist a reminder that pollinator insects include beetles, flies, and even wasps! The big blue-black glossy wasps I see on wildflowers here in Northwest Indiana look scary, but aren’t aggressive and are just busy hanging out with the flowers. I’m planning on doing some more work on this piece soon.

So excited to have a fellow native plant lover ask me about whether I could create some garden flags for her home. We found a place to have them printed and today I delivered these 12x18" double sided flags with my hummingbird and green bee art for her garden. I'm able to offer them in my shop for a limited time only - I'll be taking orders through 6/30 with delivery by mid-July.

Back to birds today. This piece is a couple of years old, but I may return to it soon and try some new things with the basic drawing. Sometimes I draw something and never want to see it again, and other times I will re-trace, re-draw, and re-purpose a design for different things. I think it’s especially useful to revisit old work when new drawings aren’t coming easily, or my creativity feels spent, or I’m otherwise frustrated with my process or time available. I think we all work in cycles and circles, and sometimes a re-work greatly improves a piece.

Snakes, but make it Cottagecore! Snakes have always been a challenge for me to draw. These are somewhat simplified, inspired by the @spoonflower “Hissterical Snakes” challenge. But even doing a stripped-down sketch made me pay more attention to things like the shape of the head and the curve of the body. I’ll be doing some more detailed hand-drawn snakes soon!

Oh! Forgot to share this harlequin beetle I *finally* finished recently. I’m still fiddling with the background color and the contrast on the whole thing, but at the very least I’ll be getting some stickers of just the beetle soon. Harlequin beetles are HUGE, and the males have super long front legs (this is a lady beetle).
